Hermoupolis

T he capital of Syros and the Cyclades Prefecture. Hermoupolis is located on the eastern side of the island and is known for its shipyard and its major port. The city was named in honor of the ancient god of commerce, Hermes(Mercury). Previously it was an industrial, shipping and cultural center of Greece, and now is a picturesque resort.

Hermoupolis was first inhabited around 1822 by refugees who relocated to the island from Asia Minor, Crete, Chios and Psara. In 1833, a few years since the first refugees arrived on the island, was built the first public high school of Free Greece. In this high school Eleftherios Venizelos attended several years after. At the same time founded the tanneries and built the port.

Since 1840 Hermoupolis experienced a rapid commercial development. With several textile mills, shipyards, and various crafts, Hermoupolis became one of the largest commercial ports in Greece. Around 1850 were built in the district ‘Vaporia‘ the church of St. Nicholas and other imposing buildings of the city such as the City Hall and the Apollo Theater.

Daily ferry connects Hermoupolis with the ports of Piraeus, Lavrio and regularly are the routes to the surrounding islands. Hermoupolis can also be reached by air.

It is a very popular place and offers all the amenities you would like to combine for complete holidays. The capital of Cyclades is highly developed concerning tourism. In the center of the city you will find all kind of shops to combine your holiday with shopping. Do not forget to visit the old market to taste and buy local products. Cosmopolitan Hermoupolis is the heart of summer nightlife, establishing it as the hottest point in the island. Along the coast line you will find many cafes, bars and taverns which are open till early hours. Located in a central place you can find the Casino of Syros as well.

Reference point of the city is Miaoulis Square with the Town Hall(mentioned above), in which are housed municipal services and the courts. The architecture of the building will impress you since it has huge staircases, high ceilings, marble and fluted columns. Nearby you will find the Archaeological Museum, the Cycladic Art Museum, the Public Library, the Cultural Center (formerly Ballroom Hellas). Within walking distance is the Apollo Theater(replica of ‘Scala di Milano’ Theater) and the imposing church of St. Nicholas. It’s also worth visiting the church of the Assumption, which kept the homonymous painting of El Greco.

In Hermoupolis you can find all types of accomodation. It offers a variety of hotels, studios, apartments with see view or else. Some of them are in the center and others are located at the foothills.

For your transportation you can use the Municipality mini bus(timetables). You will find companies to rent cars, bicycles and motorbikes. If you use your own vehicle search for city parking stations. In the area of the harbor you will find the bus and taxi station. Finally, the harbor of Hermoupolis also provides rest area for all kind of private boats.
